Policy, Tools and Guidance
for Sustainable Development – DE&S
Case Study
The Client: Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S)
The brief
DE&S required expert support to develop its approach to environmental management and sustainability, within its acquisition and through life support activities. The aim of the developments was to bring existing approaches up to date, make them more robust and to enhance clarity and usability. The team also developed new material where gaps were identified.
Cala Sustain’s role
Cala Sustain worked with our client to develop existing and new policy, tools and guidance for sustainable development with a focus upon environmental management.
Project Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS)
We developed the existing POEMS approach into an interactive, web based tool that utilised plain English and mirrored updates to the ISO14001 standard. Our work with POEMS also removed unnecessary jargon, providing clarity as to what was required and when. This resulted in a more accessible tool for non-environmental professionals such as project managers, engineers and commercial staff.
In addition, the Cala Sustain team developed and embedded the sustainable procurement guide and toolkit at various coordinated points within POEMS.
Defence Standard 0051
The Cala Sustain team lead the creation of DefStan 00-051, Environmental Requirements for Defence Systems. The standard, designed to be tailored by the acquisition in hand ,allows the MOD to contract against robust environmental management performance criteria. This was a new standard published in 2018 and designed to meet an identified gap in acquisition based environmental management.
Introduction to Environmental Management in the MOD Acquisition Process (the ‘Defence Green Book’)
The Cala Sustain team was responsible for updating the “Introduction to Environmental Management in the MOD Acquisition Process (the ‘Defence Green Book’)”. The green book is a desktop guidance manual that is extensively used across the MOD. It provides a reference point for all environmental management activities during acquisition and through life management of equipment and platforms.
The project outcome
Cala Sustain’s innovative work forms the environmental and sustainability undertakings essential within all UK defence acquisition. Our work in this area is mandated and as such informs decisions and through life management for every acquisition ranging from ships to planes, laptops to tents, clothing to food and much more. That’s a staggering £200billion of procurement where Cala Sustain’s work is making positive difference.
