Environmental Management
and Legal Compliance
Case Study
The Client: Airbus.
The brief
Our client required environmental management support at its Filton site in Bristol. The site includes a former airfield and is a large industrial location with a workforce of approx. 5000 people. The site has been subject to heavy industry for over 100 years which presents a number of legacy issues. We also held responsibility for maintenance and application of the Airbus environmental management system.
Cala Sustain’s role
Cala Sustain worked with our client to:
- manage legacy contamination risks,
- maintain and develop the environmental management system,
- ensure regulatory compliance,
- oversee prescribed legal processes and
- facilitate regular site and document audits.
Complex Legacy Issues
We helped our client to ensure legally compliant management of multiple complex legacy issues. Having been a vast site of heavy industry for over 100 years there were many known and unknown issues of historic pollution and degrading infrastructure above and below ground. Some of the issues that we carefully managed were pre-second world war. We also needed to be aware of the locations historic importance which included a rich military and engineering background as well as war graves.
Environmental Management
We helped our client to develop and maintain the environmental management system. The management system was crucial for effective management of a range of complex issues ranging from current use of harmful substances and management of discharges through to monitoring and management of legacy issues.
Prescribed Processes
We worked with all site stakeholders and regulators to ensure careful management and monitoring of all prescribed processes on site. Effective stakeholder liaison was required between operational areas, responsible persons, regulators and legal teams.
The project outcome
We successfully managed the sites many environmental issues, reducing or eliminating them where possible. We were also able to be reactive to a variety of situations and deal hand’s on with issues as they occurred. Our work on the environmental management system strengthened the formal management backdrop which enabled effective environmental management.
